Assisi

Assisi-Perugia
Duration: 10 hours

Tour of Assisi

Your English speaking driver-guide will meet you at your hotel to start this excursion to Assisi, driving through the famous Umbria region that rivals with Tuscany for the beauty of the countryside. The drive is about two hours and you will get to see some breathtaking panoramas. Assisi, one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Italy, owes its fame to St. Francis, born here in 1182, the son of a wealthy merchant who, after spending his early years in a life of dissipation, devoted himself to the service of the poor and the sick, founded the Franciscan order and died in 1226 in poverty and abstinence. His life, around which are many legends, has inspired major works from famous artists (including Giotto). With its well-preserved medieval streets and houses and its treasures of art, Assisi is one of Italy’s greatest tourists sight.

You can visit the Church of Santa Maria Degli Angeli, which is at the bottom of the hill, then climbing to the town visiting St. Claire’s. Your driver-guide can suggest some local trattoria for a typical lunch and after you can visit the church of St. Francis, part of the Franciscan friary in Assisi, the impressive two-storied church built over St. Francis’s tomb. The dark lower church has squat late Romanesque vaulting (1228-53) and a vestibule added in 1488; the upper church, completed in 1253, is Italy’s earliest Gothic church. The basilica suffered extensive earthquake damage in 1997 and was re-opened in 1999.

If you want to see more of Umbria in one day, the visit of Assisi can be limited to the church of St. Francis and a stroll down the typical streets, so you can spend time visiting Deruta, famous for its ceramics, or Perugia. At the end of the tour you will drive back to Rome, about 2 hours, to be dropped off at your Hotel.

Important Notes:

  • please, dress respectfully to visit the holy buildings: cover your knees and shoulders;
  • if possible wear or take with you comfortable shoes even if walking is limited;
  • watch out for your wallet and bags; it is recommended not to wear valuable jewelry.
