Etruscan Tour

Etruscan-TourDuration: 9 hours

The private Shore Excursion to the Etruscan countryside leaves from the dock of your ship at 8:00am where you meet one of our English speaking driver-guide waiting for you holding a sign with your name on. Driving about 30 minutes east of Civitavecchia you will reach Tarquinia, one of the most important Etruscan city rising 400 feet above sea-level overlooking the Marta River valley and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here you will visit the aristocratic Palazzo Vitelleschi, a work of art of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, now housing the Etruscan Museum, with well-preserved sarcophagi, paintings, tombs, frescoes from the 6th to the 1st century BC, and the Necropoli just outside the town that includes the most beautiful and well-preserved tombs of the ancient world, which brings evidence to the cult of the dead of a fascinating and mysterious people.

Next you will enjoy lunch in a local Fattoria, a well known wine and oil producer of the area, or in a typical trattoria in Tuscania, another powerful Etruscan town. Near the city, particularly along rivers, there are more Etruscan and Roman necropolis, with Etruscan tombs that have returned many objects dated 4th – 2nd century BC now showing inside the Archaeological National Museum of S. Maria del Riposo. In Medieval historical centre the beautiful Roman basilica of San Pietro (8th century) stands on the old Etruscan acropolis and has a 13th century façade with symbols of the Evangelists; the interior has massive columns with beautiful capitals and decorative paving. Another church, Santa Maria Maggiore located just outside the populated area, is also worth seeing. At the end of the tour you will drive back to your ship in a comfortable 40 minutes ride.
