Siena & San Gimignano

Siena-and-San-GimignanoDuration: 9 hours

The private Shore Excursion to Siena and San Gimignano leaves from the dock of your ship at 8:00am where you meet one of our English speaking driver-guide waiting for you holding a sign with your name on. Driving about 75 minutes east of Livorno through the Tuscan countryside you will reach Siena where you’ll immediately notice an ancient and mysterious atmosphere floating through the little narrow streets and squares. Without doubt one of Italy’s most enchanting cities built on three steep hills and unchanged since Medieval times it’s a must-see attraction of Tuscany. You will have the chance to see all the major sites like the gothic cathedral (Duomo) and the Torre del Mangia and yet the shell shaped Piazza del Campo, which has been seen in movies, photographs and advertising campaigns, where the “Palio” horserace takes place on July 2nd and August 16th, one of the most important events in the life of a Siena native. The Duomo (1136 – 1382) is one of the most spectacular in ITALY and one of the few to have been built south of the Alps in full gothic style. In 1339, the Sienese decided to build a new nave to the south with the aim of making the biggest church in Christendom. This plan came to nothing when plague hit the city, killing off much of the population. The uncompleted nave now contains a museum of Gothic sculpture.

Next you will proceed to San Gimignano to admire the famous towers and see the “Duomo” or Collegiate Church, the “Palazzo del Popolo”, the “Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà” (which is now the town hall), S. Agostino Church, the Museum of Holy Relics and the infamous Museum of Torture, which displays early instruments of torture and reminds everyone that cruelty and violence existed even way back then. Also there are numerous shops which sell local products including the “Vernaccia” wine. At the end of the tour you will drive back to your ship in a comfortable 60 minutes ride.

Important Notes:

  • please, dress respectfully to visit the holy buildings: cover your knees and shoulders;
  • if possible wear or take with you comfortable shoes even if walking is limited;
  • watch out for your wallet and bags; it is recommended not to wear valuable jewelry.
